Some people might wax poetic about silver linings and the good to be found in evil, blah blah blah. The first thing I thought of was a Kanye quote* but that was a little weird. So I contemplated "crap sundae with the best possible cherry" or "shit storm with a fantastic calm". The point is, a lot of bad things happened that were eclipsed by something so awesome that, despite everything, I'll look back fondly on that week for the rest of my life.

Obviously, there was the bombing at the Boston Marathon. This was unacfuckingceptable. Frightening, terrible and unacceptable. Marathon Monday is for two things: running like a crazy person** and celebrating those crazy bastards with day drinking. I think Colbert said it best:

Then there was my birthday. This was actually not a huge deal. There was the typical angst I've experienced every year on my birthday since I was 7 (I was a real hoot and a half as a kid), one glass of wine (I'm on a damn diet) and some lovely music and friends. There was also lots of looking at pictures of Helen Mirren to reassure myself about the onslaught of aging.

Then came the vomiting. Yup. The vomiting. Two and a half days of it. This was unacceptable.

Finally, I felt ready for solid food. So I ate an apple.

Then came the swelling of the face. Yup. Swollen face. Apparently, I am allergic to apples. As I stared into the mirror, watching my face contort with a morbid fascination, I may have said, "but it wath thuppothed to be my birthhhday!" (my tongue swelled up too).

But here's the thing: it wasn't really supposed to be my birthday. Not this year. There was a much more important birthday being had. That of my perfect, beautiful niece. Meet Calliope:

It's amazing what a birth can do. I mean, how crazy is it that this squishy ball of baby is going to learn and experience everything it is to be a human? Seeing her, I care a lot less about getting older and dying. I mean, I may be gone, but how great is it that she'll still be there to remember me? Babies really do bring all the hope and joy and crap that Louis Armstrong likes to sing about.

And yes, I've already ordered baby's first turban. And no, I'm not kidding. I'm Auntie Mame, bitch.

*Specifically this one: "this week's been a bad massage, I need a happy ending." Ok, so technically I quoted Kanye there, but I think you'll agree I'm still showing real restraint and growth.
**Did you know that many marathon runners cross the finish line with bloody nipples? BLOODY NIPPLES. Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101317513667603189.post-31591800603614545622013-04-07T21:37:00.000-07:002013-04-07T21:37:43.035-07:00Birthdays: Harbingers of Cake and Death

My birthday is next week, which is exciting because of cake but also crap because of the inevitable decay and decline into death. Pardon my grimness, I just came from the dermatologist*. Which is part of why this wishlist doesn't include any of the more practical things that I want for my birthday, like acting classes, because that's just not as pretty, you know? These are the kinds of presents that grownup classy ladies give and get. But then, grownup classy ladies don't get to eat ice cream at midnight in bed so I think we're about even.
*who recommended that to prevent aging I "quit moving my face so much."
You know how the longer you neglect a project/relationship/healthy habit the harder it is to get back into it? That's where I was at with this blog. But then a friend of mine asked why I hadn't been blogging lately and I muttered some excuses that I won't waste your time with, and she said to shut up and write, so here I am.

So! Hi! How are you? It's been a gazillion years! It's been so long that I had to change the header of this blog! I am no longer just outside the city, I'm actually in the city! And no one has ever been more excited to be inside anything since any teenage boy ever*.

Sometimes, when a person looks forward to something so much and for so long as I did, it can only end up being disappointing. This is so not one of those times. Living in the city has been so amazing I've cried from happiness about 6 times. Luckily I was almost always alone and on my scooter, so I could blame the wind and the cold in my face**.

If you're looking for up-to-the-minute updates on my goings on, here is my Instagram, here is my Tumblr, here is my Twitter, and here is my website. Good Christ, that's a lot of fart jokes and cat pictures. To even things out, here is an Instagram feed made up entirely of puppy pictures! And since I no longer have moving, unpacking or really anything to use as an excuse, I resolve to be a better blogger henceforth. Unless, you know, Game of Thrones is on or something.

*That is a sex joke.
Hangover <strike>Prevention</strike> Cures

Drinking to excess is bad. We all know that. It's painful, high in calories and often high in embarrassment as well. That said, the holidays are upon us and holidays bring parties, families, and stress. Throw it all together and you've got a super fantastic recipe for a hangover. Therefore I consider it my civic duty to share several tactics I've learned over the years to avoid and cure them. To be honest, I don't drink very much anymore* (despite my penchant for shiny barware, exciting bars and cocktail recipes) so several of these come straight from a doctor friend of mine who manages to have a vibrant social life despite working all the damn time, so they're tried and true.

Everyone knows the things you're supposed to do to prevent a hangover. Don't drink too much (duh), eat a meal heavy in carbs AND protein beforehand, and drink plenty of water. These work, but aren't always feasible. Although drinking a large glass of water with every drink is a really good and easy idea. So the rest of this blog entry is dedicated to those nights when prevention got thrown out with the twists and cherry stems.

1) Go out and buy a B vitamin supplement. Liquid is best, sublingual is ok, but regular tablets do next to nothing.

2) Before you go out, put the following items by your bedside or in your purse: an enormous glass of water, the vitamin B, 2 aspirin and a cracker or similiar small food item (preferably one that your cat won't eat. Which, if you are me, excludes popcorn, fruit and sourdough bread because Rue is a big, old freak).

3) When you wake up at the crack of dawn, in that weird in-between state where you're still drunk but already cranky, drink all of the water, then refill the glass for later. Eat the cracker, and then take the aspirin and the vitamin B. It's important to do it in that order because B vitamins can cause headaches if they hit an empty stomach. Go back to sleep.

That on its own will do wonders. But when you wake up later on, pinch one nostril closed, and take several deep, fast breaths into the other one. Do it on the other side. Then massage the sides of your nose and the front of your eye sockets, where your eyebrows are. Optional: nasal spray.

Everyone has their perfect hangover food, and it varies widely. The Boy, for example, starts every hungover morning by declaring, "living legend needs eggs." I tend to require carbs by the approximate truckload. I always say go with your gut when it comes to food, but here is a nutritionally perfect hangover breakfast, full of things that will replenish your system and prevent almost all of the terrible symptoms, so eat as many of these ingredients as is possible/pleasant.

Banana
Hearty white toast with butter and marmite
Scrambled eggs, salted
Optional: vegetable juice, wheatgrass shots, EmergenC, orange Gatorade.

I don't know why orange Gatorade is better than the other kinds, but the hangover Gods have spoken and it is so.

I hope this helps, and had at least a few tricks that were new to you. Did I miss any? Do you have any rituals that you swear by? Go forth and be merry. Hell, be overly merry if you want to.
I've been getting preeeetty comfortable up on my high horse lately, and everything that put me there has been related to fat shaming women. See Exhibit A, Exhibit B and Exhibit C*. There is so much wrong with it- the example it sets, the message it sends, the double standard it sets for women. It's a complex issue that I've thought about a lot, and will hopefully be writing about more in depth for a prominent plus-size publication (say that 5x fast). But what it comes down to is this: everyone of size is shamed to some degree, which is counter productive in the fight against obesity. But while men are encouraged to "get healthy" by the media, women are expected to become attractive for the benefit of the male gaze. It's sizist, sexist, and stupid.

And along that vein,
But this past weekend I stumbled upon the best one I've ever used. Here's how I discovered it:

This is the scrub I use for my lips when they get dry, especially in the winter:

1 tsp lemon juice

1/2 tsp olive oil

1 tsp sugar

It works pretty well, and I decided to make a larger batch for my hands. I have terrible cuticles, and I can never get them to look as good as they do at a salon, so I decided to give myself a Big Fancy Manicure. I thought this might be the key. But, because I'm a raging spaz, I grabbed the wrong bottle and instead of olive oil, dumped a crap ton of balsamic vinegar into the bowl of lemon and sugar.

It looked and smelled gross but, because I am super lazy, I decided to go with it.

You guys. My hands were so soft. So, so, so soft. Freaky soft. I kept chasing The Boy around making suuuper inappropriate Of Mice and Men references. Really disturbing stuff.

By the end of the weekend, I had scrubbed my whole body, including my face with this scrub and I was softer than a baby's ass*. I felt like if someone tried to hug me I would just slip right off of them. I swapped rice vinegar for my face because I was nervous about balsamic being too strong and it works just as well. I was so freaking dewy.

In conclusion: vinegar is amazing. I have really sensitive skin and there was zero irritation, which I've only experienced from one brand, SukiPure. But this is a much more affordable option.

Have a beautiful weekend!

*Full disclosure: I have never touched a baby's ass. Doody comes out of there.

Sarah Silverman is right: that is some bullshit. This election is in no way won, and we shouldn't get cocky, we should get registered and we should VOTE. Here's how to find out if you're registered and don't forget you have the option to vote early. In fact, if you're feeling super lazy/busy, email me your address and I'll print you out a form, fill out as much as I can, and send it back to you with a stamp on it, ready to mail. Seriously. I was forced to mourn, from afar, the fact that crop tops are here to stay. Being so far removed from the spectacle and fuss made it was hard to get into the spirit of things. Besides that, something about being surrounded by uber German Gingerbread houses just made me really giggly. And nervous. Giggly and nervous.

All of the houses looked the same!

Rastede, Germany: where everyone knows your name. And Social Security Number.

How do they all keep their lawns so neat? And when did they all get together and decide on red flowers?! Every house had red flowers. It was weird.

At any rate, since my head is in apartment mode, I thought I'd translate all the fashion bullshit into decorating....bullshit. So here are some items and collages that represent the various trends of NYFW:

Neon
The neon trend is here to stay, sort of. I noticed at the first show I went to, the Kaelen presentation, that the neon yellow was a watered down version of what I've seen in seasons past and that held true for many other shows. It's a subtler, more grownup neon. But when you're working with an entire room instead of a size 2 model, there's room to splash out a little more. I love that ampersand print from Etsy, and I like the idea of spray painting a chair neon pink. Or, if you value your brain cells and aren't into the idea of accidentally huffing paint, you could buy that one.
Black and White
Stripes, mixed patterns, sleek suits- black and white was everywhere this season. Dolce and Gabbana had some very ladylike striped suits that I loved. When it comes to home decor, part of me wishes that I was one of those minimalist people who could pare down everything I owned and stick to 3 black frames with spare prints, and a huge white couch in an otherwise bare room. But, to be honest, I'm really more of a more is more type of person when it comes to decorating. Still, a girl can dream.
Leather
I am all about the leather trend. I've held on to my three (totally different and therefore justifiable) leather skirts just because I know that they will always be in style. Also, my favorite piece of furniture is an enormous leather chair I inherited from my grandfather.
Green (and a little purple)
Green is apparently the It color for this season/the new black/yadda yadda yadda. I don't really care, since whenever I wear green I look nauseous. But Kermit was onto something, since green is shown to promote relaxation and creativity. Too much of it, though, can promote laziness, so it's more a bedroom than a study color (the human brain is amazing). For more info on the effects of color on the brain, click here.
This has inspired some DIY ideas that may be appearing shortly on the blog. Until then, what are some of your favorite decorating trends? Did I miss anything? Is there some way to translate a crop top into home decor? And how do I avoid it at all costs?Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101317513667603189.post-28546166344219736582012-09-21T09:40:00.000-07:002012-09-21T09:40:03.978-07:00Big(ish) News!

We're moving!

The Boy and, more importantly, The Cat and I are packing in this suburban life and heading to the Big City. I'm excited, The Boy's apprehensive and The Cat has no idea. I'm kind of hoping he won't notice. Of course, as it turns out, planning a move, a wedding and working a job that entails odd hours and last minute travel is kind of hard.

But while I'm going to miss the hell out of our house and our yard, I'm pretty excited to find out what life is like outside of a train car. I've heard good things. Besides that, it will be much easier for me to make fun of blonde bitches from Connecticut when I'm not a blonde bitch from Connecticut.

We'll be downsizing considerably, which means two things:

1) We're getting rid of a lot of crap. If you're in the market for any crap, let me know.

2) There's nothing like going through everything you own to make you want to replace it all, but in the spirit of downsizing, I'm going to refrain from adding to our mountain of crap, and take out all of my shopping impulses on the blog. So get ready for that.

There's lots of other projects brewing as well, and I'll have lots more news in the weeks/months to come so stay tuned!

Big Freaking News: The Boy's sister and her husband are expecting a child. And, since this is my blog, which means everything is about me, that means that I can now expect to be an aunt! An aunt! Aunts are important! I've loved all of my aunts! I'm so excited I could pee*.

When discussing possible monikers, I wasn't satisfied with the typical Aunt/Auntie Sarah options. There was something lacking. Then I remembered what I've been periodically bellowing at The Boy for the past few weeks:

If you have not witnessed the cinematic brilliance that is Auntie Mame, stop reading this and go watch it now. I'll wait. It's on Netflix Watch Instantly so it will be easy-peasy-don't-be-sleazy.

It may be subtle as a blow to the head and 45 minutes too long but it is also the singularly most influential film on my life and style since Roman Holiday. It was made in the 50s about the 20s, so there's bright colors, loud patterns and headwear up the wazoo. To prepare for the child-to-be**, I've put together a small list of what it takes to be Auntie Mame.
Note: I have not been sponsored by any of the following companies, nor do I own any of the following items. In other words, if you want to buy them for me, I'll be your best friend forever because I fucking love presents.
Luckily, Mame-appropriate legwear is experiencing a resurgance in the fashion world. Pajama sets, sequin pants, patterned pants, and matchy-matchy suits are all the rage. Example A: this H&M window.

For 90s Kids Only:

This revelation came to me in a flash while on the train: Gaga is Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century.

Which means that Raven Symone really can see into the future. You guys, everything is beginning to make sense. Raven is a psychic and I am a genius.

Was anyone else super disappointed when Zenon went to stay with her aunt on Earth and all the kids made fun of her killer outfits and hair? That was my earliest exposure to the fact that haters are, indeed, going to hate.Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101317513667603189.post-15524668666634494772012-08-21T08:33:00.001-07:002012-08-21T08:33:31.811-07:00Inspiration: Phyllis Diller

One of the greats died yesterday, at a time when women desperately need pioneers*. She was an awkward, loud, garish beacon of light for awkward, funny and loud girls everywhere; breaking into a field that's dominated by men to this day.

Diller made it in comedy at a time when, as her protegee, Joan Rivers, said, "you had to look funny to be funny" and that's true. Diller failed to live up to the expectations set for women and that provided her with ample material to poke fun at. But she also had to make fun of herself because society has several choice words for women who dare to make fun of anything else.

I was at an open mic last night where I saw a wide spectrum of bravery and cowardice: comics who lashed out and were mean just for the sake of being mean and comics who were unflinchingly honest and brave, if only for a 5 minute set. I hate to categorize people, but the mean comics, who said cruel things about people who were different from themselves, were all white, frat-boy handsome men. They made fun of others because they were never taught to question or devalue themselves. The honest comics were the ones who were outside that median in some way: they were gay, or a minority or female. Being on the outside often inspires people to erect** a comedic wall of defense: a desire to make fun of ourselves before someone else does it for us.

And maybe that's all making fun of oneself is: a defense mechanism. But I still think it's brave and hard to do well. And Diller did it well for over 50 years.

It is Fran Fine's Mecca, Mothership and Holy Land all rolled into one discounted designer ball.

And while I have never been to their clearance sale, they did invite me to check out their Italian event which is going on now. Italian designers like Prada, Moschino, Dolce & Gobbana and Mossino are on sale and have preview collections in select locations so head to the nearest one and make for the Back Room. It's also online here.

For the unveiling of the collections, I decided to dress as an eccentric, old, Italian woman just shy of losing her marbles.
They even had free snacks and wine. It was great, I wined, dined and shopped until I ate a strawberry and my face puffed up. But I'll be heading back soon and will report back with my findings.Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101317513667603189.post-61353617851812033772012-07-27T16:41:00.003-07:002012-07-27T16:41:45.992-07:00Summer Style and Drinks

Speaking of style

Many of my friends bemoan the limitations of summer style and by August are wistfully looking at coats and scarves online. I, on the other hand, totally love summertime clothes. That is because I am a slightly trashy person who thinks all girls look good in cutoff shorts and polka dots are just tops in terms of style.

That said, any and all appreciation for even the concept of clothing went out the window when our air conditioning broke. It is hot, yall. Real hot. And pants and I are not the closest of friends even in cooler times, so I have been taking everrrrrry opportunity possible to lounge around in my underwear. But I can't stand in front of my open freezer in The Boy's boxers all the time. Some of the time I have to wear clothes.

So these are some of the things that I wouldn't hate wearing:

Aforementioned polka dots. They are simultaneously ladylike and chic with just a hint of a pink umbrella and a snap of gum.

Don't get me wrong, I love heels. It's kind of one of my things. But heels and shorts or even heels with short dresses are a tricky endeavor, especially if you're given to falling asleep with your legs splayed on the train. Loafers are great because if they're interesting enough they distract from the fact that they make your legs look short. And, if you want to go with a heel, how amazing are those Pierre Hardy beauties? I die.

Summer Style- Brights by travellinglightly featuring canvas tennis shoes

I was a little slow to jump on the neon/brights bandwagon. One of my friends has been wearing it flawlessly since high school, and she set the bar pretty high. So when I wear neon I tend to shoot for Ernest Hemingway meets Cindy Lauper and I think I come out ok.

Whilst wearing these clothes, I recommend drinking the following concoction:

Ingredients
Scoop of Apricot Rosemary Gelato from Whole Foods*
Champagne
Splash of St. Germain

Any gelato works, but that apricot stuff is to die for.

Hope you're all staying cool and avoiding pants. They're just the worst.
The winner is Kate Henckel! Email me at erraticinheels@gmail.com and I'll give you your gift card code. Congratulations!

In other, non-giveaway related news, The Boy and I set a date for That Fucking Day* and it is less than a year away. Which means I have to do things in order to prepare for it. How weird is that? Fortunately, one of those things is eating lots of cake.

What that means for the blog is that I may occasionally post some TFD-related things on here, but I promise to remain snarky and awkwardly self-aware throughout.

Congratulations again to Kate and long live cake!
THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED

My favorite time of year has really, truly arrived. The time of year when all of my favorite things come out: fireflies, fireworks, water parks and watermelon. It's the time of year where I might be the only one older than 15 in the pool but I'm not the only one that smells like sunscreen all the time. Incidentally, I think everyone should wear sunscreen all year round and take every opportunity to swim. Life is short but wide, after all.

As a kid, I was always the first one in the water. Pool, ocean, river, lake, didn't matter to me. Any time I got near anything bigger than a puddle I went in. As a result, anytime I was out of my parents sight, they braced themselves for my returning a sopping, giggling mess.
As an adult, I've learned to keep a swimsuits (and sunscreen) handy to prevent aforementioned sop. And, in an effort to spread the good word, I'm giving away a $50 gift card to SimplyBeach.com to one lucky reader!
After <strike>perusing</strike> obsessing over their website, I can tell you I have never seen such a good selection of swimwear and lingerie. They have something for everyone, especially those who may have had trouble in this area in the past. I, for example, have enormous breasts AND a sliver of dignity, so I have often struggled myself. They have suits going up to an G cup, and loads of plus-sized, petite-sized and generally all-sized options. They also have a great selection of lingerie. Check out their website here.
My love for them is undying and unfettered. I have, and probably will again, created several awkward silences defending them to roomfuls of haters. I even created a religion for her in Switzerland.

While in Boulder, my friend, who is a fucking genius, revealed to me a revelation of hers.

"Sarah," she said, "do you know why you love Kanye West so much?"
"Because," I answered, "he is awesome?"
"Yes," she replied, "but also because he is Fran Drescher."

Mea culpa. Better late than never, I present the winner, Miss Mina!

Giving the watch to Miss Mina guarantees the watch will be paired with something glamorous. I know because her blog says so. If you like beautiful, vintage things and glamour, check out said blog here.

Another very patient Twitter follower pointed out that the link to my Tumblr page was broken in a post a while back, so here is the correct one.

That said, now that I'm out of school I am planning to be a much better blogger. My goals for the summer are to learn how to make pasta and how not to hate Brooklyn, so I'll be recapping those adventures accordingly. Recipes, recaps and even another giveaway so be sure and check back.

Meanwhile, I'm headed off for a cruise to Bermuda. Apparently I cruise. I feel a little like an anthropologist heading out to explore unknown territories. I will report back shortly with my findings.

*By the way, are you following me on Twitter? You should be. I talk a lot about potty humor and backstage model nonsense.Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101317513667603189.post-86765277145721198072012-06-07T10:30:00.000-07:002012-06-11T12:00:49.931-07:00Travel Recaps: StuttgartWhen I arrived in Stuttgart, I was cranky. Like, travelled for 24 hours, starting at 4am, concluding at 10am the following morning cranky. And the 8 hour time difference totally cocked me up, and it's not as though I have a rock solid grip on time as is.

So I grouched myself into a taxi, grumbled into my hotel, and then lurched onto the bed, determined to dislike everyone and everything around me. I woke up at 4am the next morning and felt....better. But I still didn't like anyone. At 5am, I decided to go for a run to clear my head and take in all the stupid sights.
Guys, the sights were freaking delightful. Stuttgart made it really hard to be cranky. The roses were blooming, the buildings were beautiful, and there was a 30 yard stretch of the park full of sleeping ducks.
As I rounded the corner on these sculptures I literally stopped dead in my tracks and said, "Oh, for fuck's sake!" Out loud, much to the surprise of the woman jogging nearby.

It was scenic as balls and it put me in a good mood that lasted until the late afternoon when the worst jetlag I have ever had kicked in, just as we were about to shoot the hosiery section of the catalog. By the way, next time you buy a pair of tights and see the lovely legs on the packaging, you should know that the model who owns those legs had to hoist her ass in the air and pretend to sit upside down to make them look like that.

But all's well that ends well and the shoot went smoothly and afterwards I treated myself to a gelato. Oh, it also happened to be THE BEST FUCKING GELATO IN THE WORLD. Seriously, Stuttgart is worth a trip just for Old Bridge Gelateria. I had a scoop of nutella gelato and a scoop of frozen yogurt and spent the whole time debating which was better. I almost cried when I got to the cone...UNTIL I BIT THE CONE. EVEN THE CONES ARE BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE EVER. If this company doesn't hire me again soon I think I'll go into withdrawal.Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101317513667603189.post-9655783345670413382012-06-06T17:43:00.000-07:002012-06-06T17:46:46.636-07:00More on that whole 10K ThingWhile training for the 10K, I used this schedule, wore these shoes (I know, I know, but they got rid of my plantar fascitis immediately) and listened to this playlist:

Towards the end of the ten weeks, I started substituting relaxed 4-5 mile runs for the intervals. Unfortunately, the week before the race was finals week at school so I barely trained at all, and then spent most of the days leading up just getting acclimated to the altitude in Boulder. I ended up walking about half of it, and I think if I'd kept up the training plan towards the end running the whole thing wouldn't have been a problem.

Around the 7th kilometer, I realized that this was something that I really could do, and I had a kind of breakthrough (for lack of a better word) about my body. I suddenly believed, truly, that being fit, and strong was more important than how I looked. I had faith in the whole of my body, even the parts that I feel insecure about. Suddenly, it wasn't something that I had to fight with and hide and change for the world but a vessel that was going to take me where I needed to go, that I could push and challenge and it was pretty great.

I'm not really a fitness-y person, but that feeling was really infectious, and I want to feel it again. I don't think I'll ever be one of those scary runner people
who stops by the side of the road to take their pulse and says things
like, "gait" and "hydration packs" but a lot of that is because I am
totally grossed out by my pulse.
Still, since the race, it's been easier than ever to get myself to run, and it's more fun than it was while I was training. Some of that might be the zombie scare. If you're a catastrophist like me, reading the news, putting on "Run Through The Jungle" and going for a run at dusk is a really good way to get yourself in Zombie Apocalypse shape fast.
The Denver International Airport is as lovely an airport as any, whatever Douglas Adams may say. And as one departs from it, one is treated to a rare vision of sculpted art. And by rare I mean terrifying and by vision I mean specter.

This is the enormous stallion sculpture that greets visitors. It seems relatively harmless from a distance, until you come around and see the demonic glowing eyes, which are yellow in the day and red in the night. For a more versatile horror experience, obviously.

Good Fucking Christ.

And you hear that it killed its creator. I am not making this up: the scultpure fell on the sculptor and killed him. It is the spawn of Satan.

Aside from the terrifying welcoming committee, Boulder was fantastic. It's a great city, and I left feeling rejuvanated, inspired and ready to take on anything. Except, as it turns out, a 24-hour schlep to Germany with an 8 hour time difference that wiped the floor with me. But more on that later.

Ostensibly, I was there to run the Bolder Boulder 10K. If anyone is looking for a good starter race, this one is great. It feels like a parade where the crowds run by the floats instead of vice versa. It's relaxed, fun, and doesn't involve any terrifying fund raising. And once I was acclimated to the altitude, Boulder is perfect place to run. The natural splendor is a great alternative to a stairmaster, and the city seems to revolve around fitness. Everything is organic, there are more yoga studios than you can shake a stick at, and no one will judge you if you stand around shaking sticks at yoga studios. Maybe it's all that medical marijuana.

In reality, I was there to see my oldest friend in the world. Not oldest age-wise, obviously. In fact, she kicked my ass to keep running for the last .5 kilometers which, she cheerfully pointed out, only went halfway up an enormous hill. She also didn't judge me when I mumble-wheezed something profane in response.

She didn't even make fun of me when I forgot my running shoes, God bless her. Leading up to the race, when we weren't doing yoga, this was pretty much our life:

Which has taken some time to sink in, at least for me. Although my dad seems to have taken to the information rather well...

Graduation seems like such a quick and easy process on the endless photo stream of shellshocked twenty-somethings and beaming parents that crops up on my Facebook feed for the entire month of May. But, in reality, it's a week long endeavor that involved handing in a 57 page final project, then going to the same barbeque with the same hotdogs for various arbitrary reasons all week before finally sitting through a four hour ceremony where they read 800+ names out loud and the guy next to you chants the name of his fraternity every time one of his brothers walks. But at the end of it, I was still grinning like an idiot. In fact, I felt like this:

Probably because I had some balloons. You see, I celebrated in several ways throughout the week. Firstly: I stole some balloons.

There was a party for all the literature majors after we handed in our project, and we all got balloons. And I stole a shit-ton of them.

I'd been copy-editing for 36 hours straight, and it seemed like a good idea. I took them home, put them above my bed, and slept for 12 hours.

Then, after the graduation ceremony, my parents, The Boy and I went out to dinner and The Boy told a story about coming home to find his fiance dead asleep under a bunch of balloons. We all had a good laugh, and I chuckled and refused to throw them out. And my mom gave me an amazing vintage lunchbox and cake. Life was good.

Then, I had a party with some girlfriends. We drank beer, ate burgers and caught each other up about our lives. Under the balloons I nailed to the ceiling.
I had a few idle days this week, which is not something I've had for quite a while. That's the thing about school: even when you're relaxing, there's always a project, an exam or something hanging over your head. Which works for me: I get the most done when I have the most to do. And in the face of having nothing substantial to do, I went...a little overboard in prepping for this party. When my friends arrived and saw the porch one of them put it this way: "you should instagram the shit out of this."
Once my friends arrived, I did relax and we had a killer evening. After the burgers and beers we ate cupcakes, drank prosecco, did our nails and watched Clueless. I hope this is an indication of what life is like as a college graduate. Balloons, lady bros, and 90s movies starring Twink Caplan.

Pre-entry FYI: some exciting things coming up on the blog, including a giveaway so tell all your friends about the weird blog by the girl who falls down a lot.

How to Stay Sane on an Airplane

I've already done some travel-type advice entries, I know, but I am super good at making flights fly by so I thought I'd share. The Boy can fall asleep instantly on an airplane and stay asleep for as long as 12 hours. I know, I flew to New Zealand with him. But I can't, so here are some ways that I make flying as optimal as possible, so as to avoid this feeling:

1) Sound reducing headphones.

They are expensive, but worth it. The second I put them on I knew I never wanted to fly without them again. I put earplugs under them when I want to sleep and it gets reeeallly quiet.

2) Travel slippers.

I never would have bought these for myself, but I got them as a Christmas present and they changed everything. Taking off my shoes and putting these on has become part of my takeoff ritual, and it instantly calms me down and gets me ready for the flight.

3) Takeoff Ritual.

Rituals are soothing, so get one. Here's mine: before I put my bag in the overhead and my purse under the seat, I take out everything I will possibly need. I put my water, phone, Kindle and iPad all within reach, I put my eye mask on my head, my earphones on my ears and my slippers on my feet, and get settled under the blanket. I also keep a little bag next to me with my earplugs, Visine, chapstick, gum, hand moisturizer and melatonin for the long flights. Then I pester the person next to me for real sleeping pills. It's fun for everyone.

4) Eye mask.

I don't understand men's aversion to these. You're asleep, what do you care what people think of you? They make everything better.

5) Enormous water bottle.

Drink it all before security. Refill it once you're through. Rinse, repeat. This not only keeps you hydrated enough to drink wine on the plane, it also ensures that you'll get up to pee during the flight so you don't have a leg stroke. That's right, I'm a blogger who cares.

6) The right music and books.

This sounds basic, but I've been next to people who wiggle and tap their feet the whole flight and I had to murder them, so you want to avoid anything that will inspire that kind of behavior. You know, for your own safety. Get something that you love and know really well, so if you get tired you can fall asleep. I've listened to certain Billy Holiday songs so much that I get sleepy whenever they come on no matter where I am. And the Disney soundtrack is excellent for early morning arrivals in foreign lands. German, by the way, is hilarious when set to the Little Mermaid soundtrack.

I've been feeling overwhelmed by knowledge lately. Part of it is being around students and professors and literature again, and part of it is just being of an age where it's my time to figure out where I stand in this world.

It's a frightening thing to realize that the more you learn the less sure you will be of anything. And to realize on an emotional level that nothing is certain or sure. To challenge everything. Which is to say question long-held thoughts and look at them from every angle like holding a leaf up to the sun to see the veins and flesh.

Exciting, yes. Invigorating too. But frightening.

And last night I was feeling overwhelmed by it all. I just wanted to tune out, watch TV and drown out my inner critic and philosopher. I wanted the comfortable, familiar, easy thoughts.

And of course that's ok. It's all about finding balance. But I knew I was just returning to what was easy because I was afraid of challenging myself. I was afraid that I might find myself inadequate in the grand scheme of things.

And then comes that cycle of behaving badly, berating yourself for it, and then doing it more because you feel bad about yourself. That cycle that traps us with food, TV, drinking or whatever vice you fancy.

Then, I got an email from my dad that told me I was capable of forming great ideas and disastrous mistakes. But that the key was not to fear the mistakes or be crippled by them. He said he didn't know why, but he felt compelled to tell me.

He said there were things I had known as a child that some struggle to learn over a lifetime. I don't know if that's true, but knowing that he believed it enough to write me late one random Monday night was enough to make me believe him when he said that it wasn't pretentious of me to set my eyes on great things.

And the reason I'm writing this is that it didn't seem fair that I should be the only one to hear such kind words. This is all pretty smarmy and out of my comfort zone, but I wanted others to hear and believe the same thing. That there is incredible potential in you, and it will take you to extreme heights and devastating lows, but never so low you can't climb back up.

There are people in this world who will cheer your triumphs and be as forgiving of your failures as you would be of theirs. And those that don't aren't worth your time.

So don't be afraid. Erratic Travellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00248024231008726133noreply@blogger.com1
