In Which the Author Attempts to Live Vicariously

While I'll be spending most of this pre-holiday season in oversized sweaters and slippers as I slave to make it through finals, for most people this season is full of opportunities to wear one of my very favorite things in the world: sparkly dresses. So here are some that I've stumbled across as I procrastinate on the internet.
Anthropologie
Modcloth
Modcloth Again
Be still my heart, Lulus.

You may have noticed that all of these are incredibly shiny. That is because I love shiny things. Seriously, that last little number is giving me palpitations. However, for the more casual holiday get together, there's this silk number, which will translate nicely into summer.

Asos
A great way to dress up casual dresses for this season is with big rhinestone brooches. I recently inherited a bunch from my grandmother, and I guess I'll be wearing them to class. Enjoy the season. Drink a glass of bubbly for me.

A Few Holiday Statistics

How patriotic are me and my porch?
A Few 4th of July Weekend Statistics:
No. of days that it did NOT rain this weekend: 0
No. of gallons of water that I lugged out to the garden pre-downfall: irrelevant since it rained all bloody weekend
No. of nations represented in our kitchen: 3
No. of patriotic thoughts:  also irrelevant as were quickly dashed by this article

Ok, maybe not all patriotic leanings were dashed. Normally, I defend American exceptionalism to my dad, because I do think the ideals and ideas that America was founded on are unique and inspiring. But this holiday brings out the curmudgeon in me. Maybe the German Shepherd I had as a kid sat on my head through one too many firework displays.

Nevertheless, it's also The Boy and my anniversary, so we had lots to celebrate. I'll spare you the smarmy details and skip to the pictures of the sweet-ass fort I built.

Handy window through which to view firework display

In the spirit of American acceptualism* The Boy and I decided to eat loads of foreign food and not rename any of it some bullshit like "freedom fries". And loads we did eat. It was practically the United Nations up in here.

Saturday night we had Mexican or, more specifically, some of the best steak tacos I've ever tasted with mango margaritas. Recipes below:

Mango Margaritas
1.5 shots of blanco tequila
1 shot Grand Marnier
1 shot mango puree (optional)
2 shots Santa Cruz mango lemonade (it's on sale for $1 at Whole Foods)
Fresh lime juice to taste
Sugar or, if you like, salt to rim the glass

Rim glass with sugar or salt. Then combine remaining ingredients in shaker and strain.

Strip Streak Tacos w/ tequila marinade
makes around 4 servings

For tacos:
8 soft tacos
5 oz. creamy goat cheese (chevre or similiar)
2 tomatoes, diced
lettuce, chopped
1/2 onion, diced
1/2 onion, sliced
black olives, chopped
1/2lb strip steak

For marinade:
1/2 c. tequila
1/3 c. fresh lime juice or 5 limes worth
1/2 tsp. cumin2 cloves garlic, crushed
Dash Adobo seasoning
          Black Pepper
          Sea salt
Hot sauce to taste

Marinate steak for at least 1 hour, or overnight if possible.

Begin sauteing the sliced onions in olive oil on medium low heat. Cook until caramelized and a little crispy, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, chop vegetables and prepare any other garnishes you'd like (guacamole, salsa, sour cream). Make sure you do this before grilling, because the steaks won't take long to cook and are best served very hot.

Wrap your tortillas in foil and preheat the oven to 350. Once it's heated, throw them in the oven.

Meanwhile, grill the steaks on high heat to char the outside. Cook them to your liking (I reccommend medium rare).

NOTE: It took only 5 minutes on the George Foreman, which is how long the tortillas take to warm up, but if you're using a hibachi or traditional grill you might want to wait a little before putting them in the oven.

Remove onions from heat, and combine with the steak. Assemble tacos.

This meal pretty much used up all my cooking mojo for the weekend so on the 4th we ordered in.

There's nothing like a little French champagne and Japanese sushi cooked by a Thai chef who was raised in Australia to make you feel like an American. Furthermore, there's nothing like eating those things inside a fort to make you feel just amazing.

Yeah, we fancy.

All in all, it was a delicious and delightful weekend that has yielded leftovers galore. Now we're onto a short week leading up to an engagement party for which I am inexplicably nervous. Have a good week!

P.S. Am still in the fort.

*See what I did there? Instead of exceptionalism where we believe we're better than everyone else I used the word "accept" giving the idea that we should accept other cultures. The words sound the same. It was hilarious.

Christmas Loot!

So, here's all what I got for Christmas. Like most people, my lovelies and I were doing Christmas on a smaller scale this year but neither of my parents were able to let go of the spirit completely.

Of course, every year my mom says Christmas is going to be small and nothing special and it always ends up wonderful and this year was no exception. She and I were up until 3am Christmas Eve wrapping presents and drinking these so we got into the (very!) festive spirit early.

My dad was surprisingly jolly- ever since our apartment burned down on Christmas Day 1995 (we all escaped unscathed) he's been a little sour on the holidays but this year he showed up wearing a Santa Hat with a big smile and a bag of presents to match.

I myself did pretty well with Christmas shopping- I only bought two on Christmas Eve. The rest I bought the 23rd.

But never mind what I gave, here's what I got!

Some of my favorite perfume from Dad.
Something about this smells very sweater-girl
fresh and clean.

A favorite. Gorgeous, vintage and long-coveted bag from Mom. Also from Mom, some beautiful pictures from my favorite children's book
The Lonely Doll. These are going to look amazing in my boudoir.

Some close-ups of my latest decorating challenge.

A fantastic hand-me-down from Mom. As an only child,
I don't have any complexes about hand-me-downs. In
fact, they might be my favorite way of getting clothing.
Lucky for me, almost all the women in my family have
impeccable taste (Mom, I forgive you for your mullet)

.

A lovely surprise from our post-Christmas escape Hotel Staff along with
my reading material from the trip.

The big present from The Boy. This gorgeous locket from Tiffany's. This cannot go on (oh please let it go on) or my transformation into a spoiled brat will be complete- Tiffany's and a kitten?

New Year's Resolutions

Right. I'm notoriously bad at keeping dates/resolutions/plans etc. but I stumbled across 2008's resolutions a few months ago and... I kept them.
But- out with the old, in with the new! Here are my resolutions for next year.

1) Take a yoga class- I've been dabbling in yoga since I was 11, but never gotten serious. This should be the the year- yoga is good for just about everything. http://www.yogajournal.com/ Odds of following this past February: 75%

2) Read more- I used to read like a fiend all through high school but being an English major in college made it hard to read for pleasure (so. much. Keats). Also, I know I'm about 10 years behind the times but books on tape are amazing! How did I never know this? And they can go right on your iPod now. Odds of following this past February: 60%

3) Go fully organic. I've slowly been switching over- cleaning supplies, food, but now I'm ready to take the big leap into organic cosmetics and everything. Perfumes have been the hardest to track down- every one I've found smells just enough like patchouli or sandalwood to turn me off. Thoughts? Odds of following this one: 45%

4) Be more punctual: I am epically, perpetually tardy. BUT! I have an iPhone now, and it's time to get this under control. We'll see. I have a lifetime of bad time management skills to overturn. Odds of following this at all: slim.

5) Become more financially savvy: I am always surprised by my bank statement. I'm great at filing taxes, and can work my way around the forms but I never know how much money I have or how much I spend. By the way- http://www.mint.com is an amazing resource for the financially challenged like me. They require online banking center passcodes, but they have a solid privacy policy and once they have your information they itemize your expenditures in easy to understand categories. They also have a great iPhone application, and a pretty website.

6) Invest in fashion: Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love cheap digs and will until the day I die but I'd like to start investing in some modern classics. I've cornered the vintage market but I'm starting to see that a gorgeous Lanvin dress (ooooh Alber Elbaz let's be best friends) can sometimes be worth 3 dresses from a cheaper vendor, if only to pass onto your children. What matters is what looks and feels best, and sometimes that might be under $20, but sometimes it's worth the splurge.

Retrospective Holiday Thoughts

I was going to post my New Year's resolutions but I thought I'd rewind a bit and focus on the holidays.
The Boy hates them, I love them. Presents, shiny objects, lots of chocolate, emboldened drinking during the day etc. The Boy, incidentally, despite eschewing all commercial nonsense still gives good and I mean good presents. My family is a tickety-tack hot mess of a pile (10 divorces in two generations in my immediate family alone), but we always seem to do the holidays right. My mom is dating a gorgeous, gangly banjo player, God bless her, and here are some pictures of my time at home in the country:

Below: A close-up of my mother's tree. She's spent the past few years in apartments that she's always turned into homes, but now she's in a gorgeous Victorian complete with tiny stairs and hardwood floors.

Below: The woodstove in The Boy's family home. His family is made up of the warmest, kindest people I know.

Below: Mom's boyfriend, The Banjo Player, has a fantastic
record collection.
I'm really quite fond.

Children abound

We had a lovely Christmas all in all, and I came out of it with some fantastic loot (more later). On Boxing Day a few of my high school friends and I got together for some good clean fun. The evening began with wine, homemade chili and the exchanging of tasteful gifts. It ended with beer, a smidge of petty theft, tequila, 7-11 hotdogs and a drunken viewing of Clueless. I like to think I remained classy, feminine and rakishly charming throughout the evening. You may decide for yourself.
