Holiday Hangover Prevention & Cures

Hangover Prevention Cures

Drinking to excess is bad. We all know that. It's painful, high in calories and often high in embarrassment as well. That said, the holidays are upon us and holidays bring parties, families, and stress. Throw it all together and you've got a super fantastic recipe for a hangover. Therefore I consider it my civic duty to share several tactics I've learned over the years to avoid and cure them. To be honest, I don't drink very much anymore* (despite my penchant for shiny barware, exciting bars and cocktail recipes) so several of these come straight from a doctor friend of mine who manages to have a vibrant social life despite working all the damn time, so they're tried and true.

Everyone knows the things you're supposed to do to prevent a hangover. Don't drink too much (duh), eat a meal heavy in carbs AND protein beforehand, and drink plenty of water. These work, but aren't always feasible. Although drinking a large glass of water with every drink is a really good and easy idea. So the rest of this blog entry is dedicated to those nights when prevention got thrown out with the twists and cherry stems.

1) Go out and buy a B vitamin supplement. Liquid is best, sublingual is ok, but regular tablets do next to nothing.

2) Before you go out, put the following items by your bedside or in your purse: an enormous glass of water, the vitamin B, 2 aspirin and a cracker or similiar small food item (preferably one that your cat won't eat. Which, if you are me, excludes popcorn, fruit and sourdough bread because Rue is a big, old freak).

3) When you wake up at the crack of dawn, in that weird in-between state where you're still drunk but already cranky, drink all of the water, then refill the glass for later. Eat the cracker, and then take the aspirin and the vitamin B. It's important to do it in that order because B vitamins can cause headaches if they hit an empty stomach. Go back to sleep.

That on its own will do wonders. But when you wake up later on, pinch one nostril closed, and take several deep, fast breaths into the other one. Do it on the other side. Then massage the sides of your nose and the front of your eye sockets, where your eyebrows are. Optional: nasal spray.

Everyone has their perfect hangover food, and it varies widely. The Boy, for example, starts every hungover morning by declaring, "living legend needs eggs." I tend to require carbs by the approximate truckload. I always say go with your gut when it comes to food, but here is a nutritionally perfect hangover breakfast, full of things that will replenish your system and prevent almost all of the terrible symptoms, so eat as many of these ingredients as is possible/pleasant.

Banana
Hearty white toast with butter and marmite
Scrambled eggs, salted
Optional: vegetable juice, wheatgrass shots, EmergenC, orange Gatorade.

I don't know why orange Gatorade is better than the other kinds, but the hangover Gods have spoken and it is so.

I hope this helps, and had at least a few tricks that were new to you. Did I miss any? Do you have any rituals that you swear by? Go forth and be merry. Hell, be overly merry if you want to.

*although if you remind me that I wrote those words when January 2nd rolls around I'll throw a leftover martini in your face.

Late to the Pajama Party

I am always late. Always. Despite being the punctual one in my family (sorry Mom & Dad, but it's just not our skill set) I am the late one in the real world. I am always "working on it" and "getting so much better" but eventually I will have to accept that I can neither pass by a puppy without saying hello nor gauge the correct amount of time it takes for me to get myself out the door.

I am also late when it comes to trends. And I usually change my mind when I see the potential for comfort. For example, I was completely anti-leggings until I realized that they were like tights for people who don't hate their crotch*.

Ponchos and capes seemed silly and over dramatic until I realized it would be like walking around wrapped in a blanket. Also, they're fantastically silly and over dramatic!

The latest trend that I've turncoated on is pajama pants. They were all over the spring runways and I scoffed until I realized that it meant we could wear pajama pants. In public! To parties! With no judgement!

Jonathan Saunders

Jil Sander

Stella McCartney
Antonio Marras
As always, I decided to try this trend with a cheap Goodwill find before splurging. And I lucked out with a fantastic Brooks Brothers pajama set. So after the party I can bumble home, throw on the pajama top, shove the boy over and be done with it.

As I put them on I wondered if I was brave enough to do it. Then I thought about my upcoming quarter century birthday and I thought, 'now is the time to experiment with stupid trends. If I don't wear these, what will I regret wearing later?'

Because I think a crucial part of getting older is looking at pictures of yourself when you were younger and thinking "I'm so glad I obsessively wore sunscreen. And so sad that I wore that while doing so."
It's all about the accessories here. Heels are crucial.
Besides, this trend is so oddly glamorous. It takes a real woman not to wear real pants. Like Auntie Mame or Alexis from Dynasty or Norma Desmond. By the way, after 4-6 glasses of champagne, I do a spot on Swanson impression if you needed any impetus to buy me a drink.
Eat it, Lalique

P.S.  For you. And me. Mostly me.

*that said, I want to make one thing abundantly clear: leggings aren't pants. Not gym pants, not pants pants, not pants under a long shirt. They just aren't pants.

Happy Fucking New Year!

Happy Fucking 2012!
Celebrated the New Year's Eve in Amsterdam with a bit of champagne, sparkly things and, later, room service and general merriment. This city is fantastic.

Planning a recap of all the places The Boy and I have been recently, but in the meantime we've gotten a loaf of bread with a paper crown wrapped around it and I really think I ought to put aforementioned crown on my head. Hope you all had fantastic holiday tomfoolery.

A Few Holiday Statistics

How patriotic are me and my porch?
A Few 4th of July Weekend Statistics:
No. of days that it did NOT rain this weekend: 0
No. of gallons of water that I lugged out to the garden pre-downfall: irrelevant since it rained all bloody weekend
No. of nations represented in our kitchen: 3
No. of patriotic thoughts:  also irrelevant as were quickly dashed by this article

Ok, maybe not all patriotic leanings were dashed. Normally, I defend American exceptionalism to my dad, because I do think the ideals and ideas that America was founded on are unique and inspiring. But this holiday brings out the curmudgeon in me. Maybe the German Shepherd I had as a kid sat on my head through one too many firework displays.

Nevertheless, it's also The Boy and my anniversary, so we had lots to celebrate. I'll spare you the smarmy details and skip to the pictures of the sweet-ass fort I built.

Handy window through which to view firework display

In the spirit of American acceptualism* The Boy and I decided to eat loads of foreign food and not rename any of it some bullshit like "freedom fries". And loads we did eat. It was practically the United Nations up in here.

Saturday night we had Mexican or, more specifically, some of the best steak tacos I've ever tasted with mango margaritas. Recipes below:

Mango Margaritas
1.5 shots of blanco tequila
1 shot Grand Marnier
1 shot mango puree (optional)
2 shots Santa Cruz mango lemonade (it's on sale for $1 at Whole Foods)
Fresh lime juice to taste
Sugar or, if you like, salt to rim the glass

Rim glass with sugar or salt. Then combine remaining ingredients in shaker and strain.

Strip Streak Tacos w/ tequila marinade
makes around 4 servings

For tacos:
8 soft tacos
5 oz. creamy goat cheese (chevre or similiar)
2 tomatoes, diced
lettuce, chopped
1/2 onion, diced
1/2 onion, sliced
black olives, chopped
1/2lb strip steak

For marinade:
1/2 c. tequila
1/3 c. fresh lime juice or 5 limes worth
1/2 tsp. cumin2 cloves garlic, crushed
Dash Adobo seasoning
          Black Pepper
          Sea salt
Hot sauce to taste

Marinate steak for at least 1 hour, or overnight if possible.

Begin sauteing the sliced onions in olive oil on medium low heat. Cook until caramelized and a little crispy, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, chop vegetables and prepare any other garnishes you'd like (guacamole, salsa, sour cream). Make sure you do this before grilling, because the steaks won't take long to cook and are best served very hot.

Wrap your tortillas in foil and preheat the oven to 350. Once it's heated, throw them in the oven.

Meanwhile, grill the steaks on high heat to char the outside. Cook them to your liking (I reccommend medium rare).

NOTE: It took only 5 minutes on the George Foreman, which is how long the tortillas take to warm up, but if you're using a hibachi or traditional grill you might want to wait a little before putting them in the oven.

Remove onions from heat, and combine with the steak. Assemble tacos.

This meal pretty much used up all my cooking mojo for the weekend so on the 4th we ordered in.

There's nothing like a little French champagne and Japanese sushi cooked by a Thai chef who was raised in Australia to make you feel like an American. Furthermore, there's nothing like eating those things inside a fort to make you feel just amazing.

Yeah, we fancy.

All in all, it was a delicious and delightful weekend that has yielded leftovers galore. Now we're onto a short week leading up to an engagement party for which I am inexplicably nervous. Have a good week!

P.S. Am still in the fort.

*See what I did there? Instead of exceptionalism where we believe we're better than everyone else I used the word "accept" giving the idea that we should accept other cultures. The words sound the same. It was hilarious.

Some Awesome For Your Weekend

These luggage tags:

These videos, which cracked me up. Yes, Algernon, work does suck dick for Skittles sometimes.

This bar, which I went to with a friend last night. They have $5 Royal Kirs, which are delicious and champagne mojitos which are enormous.

This website, which sends you perfume samples if you're a commitment-phobe about it like me. Yes, I am a commitment-phobe who's marrying her high school sweetheart. Weird.

You know what is not awesome at all? Needles. Needles are ungodly creations that have no place in modern medicine.

I had to have some blood taken in order to register for school and as I walked into the lab I'd fully calmed myself down until the woman doing the terrible deed said, "wow, these are a lot of vials. This is going to be a heck of a drawing!"

Note to any and all lab technicians: this is not an acceptable statement to make ever at all.

So, she got underway and I thought about puppies and beaches and it was over in no time. And I thought about how silly it was that I'd made such a fuss. And then I thought about the floor which seemed to be coming towards me rather fast. How odd. And suddenly the woman who did the terrible deed was saying things like, "stay with me, girlie," and "I'm just going to prop you here while I get you some water," and, "stop trying to lie on the floor."

I felt so bad for her all by herself in the lab having to lean me against a headrest while she ran and got water and wondered if I was going to throw up (I didn't) or go unconscious again (I did).

As someone who is very uncomfortable with people who aren't in control of their bodily fluids I sympathized. And she was so nice, pouring water down my throat and assuring me that I didn't have to be embarrassed because it happened all the time (I'm not sure I believe her).

Finally, I started to feel better. "Ah, you're coming back to me," she said.

"Dear God, I hope not," I said.

Some Awesome for Your Weekend

A few things that I think are awesome:

This video

Actually, this entire video series and, more specifically, this woman. I just want to keep her in my cupboard for always.

This website. Because I recently learned that I can't be left alone with Chex Mix of any flavor without eating the entire bag. This may or may not be related to Chex Mix being on sale for $1 at my grocery store. May or may not.

My garden and its bounty:

This picture:
Bahaha. I'm 5. Whatever.

Champagne and bed:

And the fact that I will be putting those two things together this weekend.

This outfit:

I'm still working on how to incorporate neons without looking weird and I think I might need this bag. Ugh, she looks so cool I hate her a little.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! After a lazy and unproductive week I'm hoping I'll be a flurry of productivity. Or, you know, drunk in bed.

Birthday Eve-ning

See what I did there? Because it's the eve of my birthday and the word 'eve' is part of the word 'evening'?

It was fucking clever, ok?

Anyways, the point is this:
TOMORROW IS MY BIRTHDAY!

Celebrations actually commenced this morning, when my life suddenly turned into a perfume commercial. I mean, I rolled out of bed
hopped on my scooter
and picked up ingredients for champagne strawberry cupcakes.

Tonight at midnight the boy and I will pop some champagne and have some grocery store cake (my favorite). To top it all off, I have a flippy new haircut and a pretty new dress.

Life is good.
This week proved rather long and trying for a lot of people, so I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing weekend.

Blogger Recharge

Today I was lucky enough to attend Lookbooks and FashionIndie's Blogger Break Room, which was a perfect way to start the week.  Spray tans by Be Bronze*, manicures, facials and massages from Spa Merge, complete with charging stations, computers and everything a blogger needs to make it through Fashion Week.

Any place that puts one of these in my hands within two seconds of me walking in the door is A+ to me
It was great. As I left to head to the Sachi + Babi show at the tents I was waxed, bronzed, painted and preened to near perfection. And as I looked around the room at the ridiculously stylish people filling the room, I had the feeling that I had snuck in somehow and would be discovered at any moment.

"Quick! That girl spends her evenings in old man slippers and can't not laugh when someone says the word 'fart'! Get her out of here!"

But somehow I slipped under the radar and got to pilfer all the goodies.

Girl got her nails did.

They even took my picture and entered it in a contest, which you can help me win by clicking here and 'liking' said picture.

What an odd world, where all you have to do is write about your daily doings and people will give you free champagne and make you look pretty.

This is the part of Fashion Week where I always get a little Debbie Downer and Erin Existential, so maybe I should just be quiet and drink my free champagne.

Besides, I think someone just said 'fart'.

*All the products and brands present were great, but this stuff was really awesome. I am tanning inept but their clear formula is fool proof. Five minutes to put on and it doesn't smudge or smear afterwards at all.

Rhymes with Blalentine's Blay

Rhymes With Blalentine's Blay
in which the author unwittingly celebrates the weirdest holiday of the year
The Boy and I accidentally had a really romantic Valentine's day weekend. We didn't mean to. But I got a fondue kit on sale at a bookstore (isn't that where everyone gets their fondue kits?). Did you know that chocolate fondue is romantic? Because I didn't.

And then the London Hotel offered me afternoon tea for two (which I highly recommend, by the way).

And then we decided to try the Champagne Bar at the Plaza.

So, just to recap: chocolate fondue, tea for two, champagne cocktails.

Then, suddenly, it was that day that rhymes with Blalentine's Blay, when everyone is being pressured to tell people that they love each other because some Saint was bludgeoned to death 600 years ago. A holiday that I think is weird and morbid and that I only put up with because it involves champagne and cupcakes.

And I celebrated the living hell out of it. I even had ribbons on my shoes. Weird. And delicious.

*let's be honest, I love it much more than the next girl

Double Happiness Launch, Post 2

Vivienne Tam and Jack Dorsey present their Double Happiness Square

The article I wrote about the press launch for the 'Double Happiness' Square can be found here.

And I can be found here.  After a perfectly disastrous train ride into the city* I had a perfectly lovely evening at a wine and chocolate bar. Good conversation, good (free!) champagne, good food and all was right with the world again.

Hope your week is getting off to a good start and middle. Fashion Week starts tomorrow and I'm going to rest up, write up and clean up. A bientot, bitches.

Happy Weekend!

It's the weekend, and I have tons of work to do. But it's still the weekend. So, a few friends, a little champagne, some high heels and I'll feel like a million bucks.

Wish List, sort of.

My mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas today and I realized that I have no idea. Normally I have a mile-long wishlist, but somewhere between deciding to make all my presents this year and actually making them (I am not a crafty person...) I forgot that I would get something too. Now that I've taken a minute to think about it...I still have no idea.

Here are a few things I can't get enough of, though.

1) Books
I know, I know. I said books weren't the best gifts, but I didn't mean it. Books from people I respect with intellects I aspire to are the best gifts in the world.

2) Vintage clothes
Speaking of Pushing Daisies, specifically anything Chuck wears. I'm (re)watching it now with The Boy and, sometime around the 8th episode, he pointed out that every single time we watch it I say, "Ooh! I love that dress/hat/skirt/whatever".

3) Champagne
Prosecco, sparkling wine, whatever. Of course champagne proper is preferable, but I'm easy.

4) Luggage
And travel gear. I have loads of it, but much of that is being employed to hold, say, scarves, or books. And there's always room for more, and there's really nothing like a good, leather duffel to make your trip easier.

5) Recipes
I love cooking, and it's the only domestic thing I'm any damn good at (see top re: crafting).

So, those are a few things that will never fail to please me. What are some things you can never get enough of, Christmas after Christmas?

Cheerful Things

So. Rue had to go to the vet today which has put me into a very. grouchy. mood. No one is safe- fellow drivers on the road, my mother's facebook friends, anyone. So I've decided to list things that cheer me up in order to distract myself and get some perspective.

I present, in no particular order:

Tropical Nights

Mountains

Dancing

Late night city adventures in odd bars

And, most of all:

Childhood best friends, pretty dresses

Artistic friends, birds

Far-away friends, Boston

Good friends, warm places

Old friends, familiar places

Blurry friends, champagne

Boyfriends, beer

I feel better. Nothing can get me down now; not broken eggs, stubbed toes, sick cats or Christina Aguilera's crippling addiction to self-tanner.
